Subtraction as a Path to Life Fulfillment

On true self-expression and refocusing on life’s essentials.

The way to increase fulfillment might be to add, accumulate, chase – and, at times, unconsciously fill. Yet a fulfilled life is not based on a mathematical equation in which more leads to greater richness. Its premise is different: substance over quantity. What gives life its weight is a sense of wholeness, alignment, and mattering.

There are times when we should not add, but subtract to experience the fullness of life – subtracting the activities, roles, pursuits that no longer reflect who we are and what we truly value. Things that no longer fit, like clothes we have outgrown.

An overfilled life can cloud our view – obscuring what truly matters, dulling our sensitivity to the beauty of daily life, and distancing us from experiencing life with our full presence. Subtraction can help us move beyond this narrowing, allowing us to see again what holds real value and to regain clarity.

It can help us recenter and refocus. The process of subtracting may be likened to an original painting that has been painted over by ourselves and the expectations of others. By carefully removing the layers that do not reflect our unique being, something more authentic can reappear, and a renewed sense of self can emerge.

Questions for returning to what matters:

  • What are the essentials of my life that provide meaning, joy, and, beauty?
  • What are the things that overfill my life – that distract or prevent me from savoring and cultivating these essentials?
  • In what domain would subtraction bring greater and truer richness?
  • What does not truly mirror who I am? Am I ready to let it go?

«Maybe the journey isn’t so much about becoming anything. Maybe it’s about unbecoming everything that isn’t really you, so that you can be who you were meant to be in the first place»
— Paulo Coelho

Individuation may involve releasing what does not reflect who we are at the core. This can mean letting go of ways of thinking, habits, identities, and stories that no longer resonate. It also means aligning our lives more closely with how we wish to evolve, to show up, and to contribute to the world.
