Subtraction as a Path to Fulfillment in Life
On true self-expression and refocusing on life’s essentials.

The way to find fulfillment might be to add, accumulate, and pursue—and, at times, to fill a void without even realizing it. Yet a fulfilling life is not based on a mathematical equation where more equals greater richness. Its premise is different: substance over quantity. What gives life its depth is a sense of wholeness, alignment, and purpose.
There are times when we should not add, but subtract, in order to experience the fullness of life—subtracting the activities, roles, and pursuits that no longer reflect who we are and what we truly value. Things that no longer fit, like clothes we have outgrown.
A life that is too full can cloud our vision—obscuring what truly matters, dulling our sensitivity to the beauty of everyday life, and preventing us from living fully in the moment. Simplifying our lives can help us move beyond this narrow-mindedness, allowing us to see once again what holds real value and to regain clarity.
It can help us realign and refocus. The process of subtracting can be likened to an original painting that has been painted over by our own actions and the expectations of others. By carefully removing the layers that do not reflect our unique essence, something more authentic can resurface, and a renewed sense of self can emerge.
Questions for getting back to what matters:
- What are the essential aspects of my life that bring me meaning, joy, and beauty?
- What are the things that overwhelm my life—that distract me or keep me from savoring and nurturing these essentials?
- In what area would subtraction bring greater and more genuine richness?
- What doesn't truly reflect who I am? Am I ready to let it go?
“Maybe the journey isn’t so much about becoming anything. Maybe it’s about letting go of everything that isn’t really you, so that you can be who you were meant to be in the first place”
— Paulo Coelho
Individuation may involve letting go of what does not reflect our true selves. This can mean letting go of ways of thinking, habits, identities, and stories that no longer resonate with us. It also means aligning our lives more closely with how we wish to grow, to live our lives, and to contribute to the world.
